BMS Spotlight on Learning

This week, we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Mrs. Katherine Ford. During my crazy RICAS schedule over the past few weeks, Katherine has been my eyes and ears in the classroom. As I taught at the high school, Katherine would give me constant updates regarding what was working well and what students needed help with in my absence. Katherine's support was so helpful and made my life so much easier as I created lessons to keep my 6th graders engaged while my wonderful colleagues covered my class. Thank you so much Katherine. This week, we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Mr. Chris Keller. Mr. Keller is so kind all of the time. Whatever you need, he is willing to do, even if it takes him a long time or a lot of effort to do - from help with math homework to giving out gold star stickers. He has made social studies so fun and interesting, transforming facts and dates into captivating activities and real world scenarios. Through many jokes, stories, and lessons, we have learned so much this year. Thank you Mr. Keller for being such an amazing teacher! (Nominated by Red Cluster Students)

This week, we would also like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Mrs. Jennifer Perreira. Mrs. Perriera doesn't only go above and beyond for her students but for her TAs as well. She is an amazing person and makes you smile when you're having a bad day. She is Kind, Caring, straight forward and only wants the best for her students and for the staff with whom she works. If anyone can get a weekly spotlight it should be rewarded to Mrs. Perreira. (Nominated by a member of the BMS Faculty/Staff )

This week we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on two 8th grade students, Bailey Duncan and James Whitehead.  Last week, these students received the prestigious Middle School Scholar Leader Award.  Students are awarded this recognition for displaying outstanding citizenship, scholarship and leadership.  Both Bailey and James have an excellent attitude toward learning, are role models for their peers and demonstrate leadership qualities in and out of the classroom.  Congratulations Bailey and James!

This school year, our incoming 8th graders will be provided time during the first week of June to select their 8th grade allied art experiences through aspen. 

 

Fundraiser reminder for Mental Health Awareness Month:

Reminder that this week is the last opportunity to donate to the Mental Health Awareness fundraiser. Proceeds go to the non-profit organization Minding Your Mind. Each cluster has a box in their Social Studies classroom, and both cash and checks are accepted. The cluster that raises the most money will receive a $100 Visa gift card

Mental Health Awareness Month Guest Speaker:

This month is Mental Health Awareness Month, and our Student Council has planned/prepared a number of activities around the topic of Mental Health. This week, we will have an amazing speaker named Andrew from Minding your Mind who spoke to our 8th grade students last week, and who will be speaking to our 6th/7th graders this week about his personal experiences with mental health. Andrew’s goal in working with Minding Your Mind is to help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues and help others who may be suffering to know that they are not alone and that it gets better. Part of Andrew’s message is the importance of reaching out to trusted adults (parents, teachers, coaches) when struggling with their emotions.

Book Drive! 

There is currently a book drive being held from now until May 30th. All donations will go to Books Are Wings, which supplies books to children in need, or Books Through Bars, which donates books to inmates across the country. Paperback books are preferred, and no spiral bound books. Please drop off donations in the designated box on each floor.

RICAS/NGSA Testing Update: 

Grade 8:

The Next Generation Science Assessment (NGSA) will be administered on Thursday, May 27th and Friday, May 28th.  Grade 8 distance learners will also be taking the assessments on these dates.  Distance learners will be reporting to the Student Union for testing.  

Make-Ups for Math RICAS will be held this week for students that missed a session(s).  Students that are distance learners,  please be on the lookout for an email from your school counselor with a makeup date.

Reading Week Opportunity for BMS Students:

Are you interested in reading a picture book to Barrington Elementary students during their reading week? Sign up to be a BMS Reader to get more information on how we will create videos for students at Primrose, Sowams, and Nayatt.
