BMS Spotlight on Learning

This week, we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Mr. Schachter. Mr. Schachter is a great math teacher because he always makes math fun. He is also very visual and helps show us the solutions to problems. I love Math class because I feel there is a very good balance between class work and independent work. Mr. Schachter also lets us listen to music during independent work time which I appreciate a lot. (Nominated by a Yellow Cluster Student).

This week, we would also like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Mrs. Bannon. Mrs. Bannon  is so encouraging and positive all of the time. She cares about each of her students individually, and will stop at nothing for everyone to succeed. She always is up to date on the world and starts the best class discussions. She’s always trying her best to help all students and is very passionate about her teaching. Thank you, Mrs. Bannon, for all you do! (Nominated by Red Cluster Students).

Do you know of a BMS Faculty/Staff/Student member that is shining bright! If you do, please complete the form below and we can include the nomination in an upcoming newsletter.

Doodle for Google Winner!

The Barrington Middle School Learning Community would like to congratulate Keta Douglas as the Winner for Rhode Island in Doodle for Google Competition! LINK TO DOODLE

Keta could have her art on the Google homepage for millions to see. Google is announcing the 54 State Territory winners in its 13th annual Doodle for Google competition, a contest open to K-12 students across the United States to design a Google Doodle inspired by the theme “I am strong because...”

In the next stage of the contest, Google will invite the public to vote for their favorite Doodle from the 54 State and Territory Winners, in order to help determine which students will go on to become one of the 5 National Finalists. Voting will be open from May 10th-May 14th on the Doodle for Google website: doodle4google.com

Google will announce these five National Finalists later this month, one of which will go on to become the National Winner and have their Doodle featured on the Google homepage for a day.

National Finalists will each win a $5,000 college scholarship, Google hardware, and fun Googley swag.

The National Winner will take home a $30,000 college scholarship and his or her school will receive a $50,000 technology package for their school/non-profit organization.

Great work, Keta! We are all so very proud of you! We encourage our entire BMS Learning Community to vote for Keta!

Mental Health Awareness Month Led by Student Council:

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and BMS has some exciting plans! These plans include (but are not limited to) bringing in speakers to talk to each grade about mental health, holding a fundraiser, a whiteboard decorating contest, and spirit days. This month, Relax and Rewind Day will also be introduced to students. Our Student Council hopes R&R can take place during FAST. It is suggested to plan a brief R&R activity on Wednesdays and Fridays during FAST for students to settle down. Each week has a theme: week one is arts and crafts, week two is puzzles and board games, week three is physical activity, and week four is movies and decoration. Student Council will provide you with a list of creative ideas for R&R activities that can be incorporated into FAST.

In addition, to support mental health awareness, the Student Council is asking students/faculty to wear green throughout the month:  Wednesday, May 5th; Friday, May 14th; Tuesday, May 18th; and Friday, May 28th.

Book Drive!

There is currently a book drive being held from now until May 30th. All donations will go to Books Are Wings, which supplies books to children in need, or Books Through Bars, which donates books to inmates across the country. Paperback books are preferred, and no spiral bound books. Please drop off donations in the designated box on each floor.

Year in Review Family Feedback Opportunities:

BMS will continue to provide families with an opportunity in May to provide feedback on what went well this year and opportunities for improvement. The goal of these meetings is to hear from families on what worked well as we navigated learning over this past year and what strategies/practices we want to continue next school year.
