BMS Spotlight on Learning

This week, we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on our amazing administrative professionals. Last week we celebrated Administrative Professional day and I can honestly say BMS would not be what it is if it were not for Mrs. Amy Skadberg, Mrs. Caron Martin, Mrs. Kelly Nelson, and Mrs. Kathy Bulman. From answering phone calls, setting up meetings, following up with parents, making sure Dr. Anderson knows where to go next :) and offering a warm welcome and a bright smile, our Administrative Professionals are simply the best. Thank you for all that you do for our BMS Learning Community.

This week, we would also like to shine our BMS Spotlight on students Emma Pautz, Phoebe Terrell, Avery Cannon, and Abigail Goblick for organizing an amazing Climate Change month for our Learning Community. From organizing fundraisers, to planning for guest speakers, to climate change facts each day, and the development of a number of resources/activities teachers could choose from, the Youth for Climate Change Leadership and Group planned for a very informative and successful Climate Change Month.

Finally, we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on students Teddy Alessandro, Nick Clark, Owen Clark and Matthew Clegg for competing and winning as a neighborhood team at the recent First Lego League competition. The team won the Rhode Island Project Innovation Award at the virtual state competition. Great work students.

Do you know of a BMS Faculty/Staff/Student member that is shining bright! If you do, please complete the form below and we can include the nomination in an upcoming newsletter.

Mental Health Awareness Month Led by Student Council:

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and BMS has some exciting plans! These plans include (but are not limited to) bringing in speakers to talk to each grade about mental health, holding a fundraiser, a whiteboard decorating contest, and spirit days. This month, Relax and Rewind Day will also be introduced to students. Student Council hopes R&R can take place during FAST. It is suggested to plan a brief R&R activity on Wednesdays and Fridays during FAST for students to settle down. Each week has a theme: week one is arts and crafts, week two is puzzles and board games, week three is physical activity, and week four is movies and decoration. Student Council will provide you with a list of creative ideas for R&R activities that can be incorporated into FAST.

In addition, to support mental health awareness Student Council is asking students/faculty to wear green throughout the month:  Wednesday, May 5th; Friday, May 14th;Tuesday, May 18th; and Friday, May 28th.

Book Drive!

There is currently a book drive being held from now until May 30th. All donations will go to Books Are Wings, which supplies books to children in need, or Books Through Bars, which donates books to inmates across the country. Paperback books are preferred, and no spiral bound books. Please drop off donations in the designated box on each floor.

Best Buddies Walk-a-Thon Save the Date!

Our BMS Best Buddies Chapter will be hosting a Walk-a-Thon at BMS on Saturday, May 15, 2021. Please stay tuned for more information on how to participate and contribute!

Wrestling Update:

The Middle School Wrestling is not able to run this school year due to COVID 19. We expect to have our programs fully operational in the Winter of 2021-2022. Although we cannot have competitions, we would like to have some training sessions for those middle schoolers interested in improving their skills. There will be weekly sessions over the next 4 weeks at the high school. Space is limited due to COVID protocols. We would ask that an athletic physical within the past 10 months be provided. All participants must have a negative Binax test weekly in order to participate. Make sure you complete the consent form for BinaxNow testing at the Middle School.

Sessions on Tuesday and Thursday will be from 6:00pm to 7:30pm at Barrington High School.

Year in Review Family Feedback Opportunities:

BMS will continue to provide families with an opportunity in May to provide feedback on what went well this year and opportunities for improvement. The goal of these meetings is to hear from families on what worked well as we navigated learning over this past year and what strategies/practices we want to continue next school year.
