BMS Spotlight on Learning:

This week, we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on our BMS Science Olympiad Team and Coach Gaurin for placing first in this year’s State Science Olympiad competition. BMS placed in the top 3 in every single event and placed first in 8 out of the 16 events. BMS will be moving on to compete in the virtual National Science Olympiad competition on May 22! Great work BMS Science Olympiad Team!

This week we would also like to shine our BMS Spotlight on student Kendal Bazerman. Kendal is the Overall RI NOW Contest winner in the recent contest run by the Rhode Island chapter of the National Organization for Women (RI NOW). Her poem is entitled, “Bold, Brave, and Beautiful,” and was in response to the prompt, “What does feminism mean in 2021?” Linked below is Kendal’s amazing poem. Great work Kendal.

Bold, Brave, and Beautiful

This week we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on student Maddie Cohea. Recently Maddie had an amazing opportunity to interview the Grandson of Jacques Cousteau, Philippe Cousteau, Jr., who is a TV Host, Oceanography, and environmental activist over Zoom that was broadcasted on Youtube. The interview focused on various environmental topics and how students can have a positive impact on the future with their actions today. Please see a link to the interview below. Great work Maddie!

This week we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Ms. Gabby Farino. Ms. Farino is a new special education teacher in the Lime Cluster this year and has been nothing less than amazing! She spends countless hours making sure her students have the specialized instruction to be successful every day. She is one of the first people to arrive at school and one of the last to leave. Her dedication to her job is commendable and her students as well as peers have the utmost respect for her! Thank you Ms Farino for being part of our Team! (submitted by Lime Teachers).

This week we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on students Jack Luttrell, Kyle Mohlman, Sean Mohlman, & Oliver Cope. Being an active citizen starts locally, with small acts of caring for the community. These students vigilantly took charge of picking up the banner advertising the book fair each time it blew over in the wind as they waited to go into school. Thank you for doing this small deed to keep the BMS learning community a positive place to be! (submitted by a BMS faculty/staff member)

This week we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on student Zoe Weiser. Zoe entered the RI Now Contest answering "What Does Feminism Mean in 2021?" Her poem entitled F.E.M.A.L.E. is an outstanding piece of work that describes how Feminism in the past and present has shaped the future for women. Zoe is a conscientious student with an enthusiasm for learning. (submitted by Mrs. Couto).

Do you know of a BMS Faculty/Staff member that is shining bright! If you do, please complete the form below and we can include the nomination in an upcoming newsletter.

BMS Spotlight Nomination

Green Ribbon School!:

It seems to be fitting that during BMS’s Climate Change Month and Earth Day, BMS was recognized as a Green Ribbon School!

The U.S. Department of Education announced last week  that Barrington Middle School is among the 2021 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools award honorees.

Barrington Middle School was nominated by the Rhode Island Department of Education for their innovative efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, improve health and wellness, and ensure effective sustainability education.  Barrington Middle School (BMS) participates in the Barrington School Department’s plan to manage energy use through the EPA Energy Star Portfolio Manager and BMS achieves a 40% energy savings above International Energy Efficiency Certificate 2009 baseline requirements.

Across the country, 27 schools, three early learning centers, five districts, and five postsecondary institutions are being honored for their innovative efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, improve health and wellness, and ensure effective sustainability education.

The list of all selected schools, districts, colleges, and universities, as well as their nomination packages, can be found here. A report with highlights on the 40 honorees can be found here. More information on the federal recognition award can be found here. Resources for all schools to move toward Tools To Green Your School can be found here.

Loaner Chargers:

We are asking our families/students to check their homes for any loaner chargers that they may have borrowed while their device was being fixed.

Community Service Food Drive a Huge Success!

The recent Community Service Food Drive was a huge success.  We had about 900 items donated to Tap-In and for the first time - every single cluster contributed.  Blue Cluster tied with Lime but since we won the sock drive I'm just going to give all the glory for this one to Blue.  An 8th grade cluster showing the support that they did is really notable and they should be very proud of themselves!!

Book Drive!

There is currently a book drive being held from now until May 30th. All donations will go to Books Are Wings, which supplies books to children in need, or Books Through Bars, which donates books to inmates across the country. Paperback books are preferred, and no spiral bound books. Please drop off donations in the designated box on each floor.

BMS will be providing families with two opportunities during the month of May to provide feedback on what went well this year and opportunities for improvement. The goal of these meetings is to hear from families on what worked well as we navigated learning over this past year and what strategies/practices we want to continue next school year.

The Virtual All State Concert:

The Virtual All State Concert will be premiering this Sunday, May 2, at 6:00pm.  We have several of our students in the ensemble performances and we thought it would be great to share with our community. The link is https://www.rimea.org/as

Afternoon Pickup:

In order for our pickup procedures to run smoothly, it is important that families plan accordingly and arrive to BMS at the time of dismissal. We have noticed, as of late, a number of cars arriving to school before 3:00pm to pick up their children who are dismissed at the last dismissal time. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Dismissal Times:

  • 3:00pm: Yellow, Aqua, Purple

  • 3:07: Razz, Blue, Green

  • 3:14: Lime, Orange, Red

Upcoming BMS Zoom Events for 5th Grade Families:

In order to prepare families for their students’ transition to the middle school next year, BMS administration and faculty will be hosting a few informational open houses on Zoom.  Click here for specific topics and dates.

RICAS Update:

Please stay tuned for an updated RICAS Testing Schedule. We needed to adjust our schedule to account for the shift in learning models for so many students! This schedule will be shared with our families a little later on this week.
