Stay Healthy this Winter - Nurse Maddy News:

Barrington Middle School has had an increase in confirmed cases of influenza, and many other students are home sick with fever and flu-like illness.

How can you tell the difference between cold and flu viruses? Many of the respiratory symptoms are similar in both illnesses. The difference, however, is in the onset and severity of symptoms. Typically cold symptoms have a slow onset, body temperature less than 100℉ with little or no body aches. In contrast, flu symptoms come on quickly, usually accompanied by a high fever above 100℉ and severe body aches. Most people who get the flu will have a fever and cough or sore throat. They may also have a runny or stuffy nose, headache, chills, fatigue, vomiting, or diarrhea.

Please encourage frequent hand washing and covering coughs, and also follow school guidelines for keeping sick children home. As a general rule, your child must be fever-free for 24 hours without the use of medication (and symptom free, if experiencing vomiting or diarrhea) to attend school. Please consider whether or not your child is energetic enough to engage in class. Keeping a sick child home from school helps prevent the spread of illness in the school community and allows your child time to rest and recuperate. If you need further guidance, please contact your pediatrician or speak with the school nurse.

 Thank you!

Community Service Drive for the Bristol Animal Shelter:

Dear BMS families, students, and staff,

The Community Service Club is holding a drive for the Bristol Animal Shelter! We all know winter can be very cold and harsh, and the shelter makes sure to care for as many animals as possible. During this season, they tend to see a lot of kittens! We are looking for canned wet cat food, dry cat food, and clay kitty litter. To keep up their kitty demand, please donate so that as many kittens as possible can stay safe, warm, and cared for this winter!

Thank you!

~ Spotlight on Learning ~

This week, we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on our BMS Counseling Staff! Thank you, Stephanie Nary, Krystal Leary, Jaime Poirier, Mary Ellen Tillotson, and Gilda Johnson. Thanks for all you do to be an amazing team! (Nominated by Mrs. Canario)

This week, we would like to shine our BMS spotlight on Ms. Slaughter. Grateful for the consistency she brings to the culture of expected behaviors at BMS. (Nominated by a member of our BMS Learning Community)

This week, we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Lily Dion and our Middle School Band! This past Wednesday, our band played to a packed house. Our band students sounded amazing! Great work Ms. Dion.

This week, we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Ms. Sawyer. Ms. Sawyer always manages to put a smile on my face and she is such an amazing teacher! (Nominated by a BMS Student).
